CITYPLANNING SCHORNDORF
Competition in Schorndorf, Germany
We want to create a neighborhood that connects and reinforces already existing qualities in Schorndorf. We have chosen to develop a concept where we connect the city's attractions into a coherent cultural route, with the new district as a hub along the river Rems. Within walking and cycling distance from our new district are the Stadtmuseum, Kulturforum & Skulpturenstadt and a number of different art galleries and studios.
The lush greenery along the banks of the river Rem is the backbone of the area and something we want to highlight, with an eventful park, with various functions in pavilions.
The residential part of the area has three distinct rows of buildings with differentiated, distinct qualities. The rear buildings house a preschool, various social functions and meeting places on the ground floor and combine elderly and student accommodation. The middle and the rows close to the water have businesses on the ground floor with residences on the other floors.
The rows follow the curvature of the river with slightly curved street spaces and are a reference to the old city. The buildings also drop in height the closer they stand to the water and are slightly offset in relation to each other to both promote views and let nature in between the houses.
In the entrances to the area, square areas, restaurants, cultivation and an accentuating high-rise with cultural center are placed in the two ground-level plans to create an inviting urban space and create movement through the area. The existing natural qualities are strengthened with interesting installations, places and paths, and the city's identity – with a rich, varied cultural life – is connected and united with a cozy residential area that reaches across generational boundaries.
