HOUSING SOUTHWESTERN STENSÖ

Two apartment buildings in Älta in Nacka municipality, just South of Stockholm. The plot is located between two areas with different character. In the East there are "houses in the park" which are characterized by large dimensions and greenery and in the South is a classic, more closed neighborhood structure. We have chosen to borrow the scale from the high risers' footprints in the East, while creating a denser structure with a broken facade and lower building height. Between the two parallel buildings, a semi-private courtyard is formed, that lets the sunlight through and offers greenery like a "house in a park", but also gets the intimate character of the neighborhood courtyard.

 

The main concept of the design is the folding of the housevolumes in, combination with the balconies being integrated into the volume by going all the way to the outer corner facade. In this way, we get both a cohesive expression and a varied facade. To clarify that our houses belong to a new annual ring, the facade is made throughout of extra wide, finely sawn standing wood paneling in spruce. The choice of material both connects to the surrounding forest environment to the West and gives the buildings a natural, warm and welcoming expression.

 

To create a safe neighborhood and a creative, urban feel, the gables have been given "bokaler" with large shopfront windows on the ground floor that encourage a lively, active and social environment.
